Prepare Months In Advance

Active Duty Credit Alert
When you are away from your usual duty station, you can place an "active duty alert" on your credit report to help minimize your risk of identity theft. When a business sees the alert on your credit report, they must verify your identity before issuing credit in your name, offering you peace of mind while away from home.

While serving in a combat zone, you automatically earn an extension to file your federal tax return and pay taxes of 180 days plus the number of days you were in the combat zone during the normal tax-filing period (1 January through 15 April).
Soldiers and Sailors' Civil Relief Act (SSCRA)
If you're in the Reserves and called to active duty, the Soldiers' and Sailors' Civil Relief Act of 1940 can save you some legal problems and possibly some money as well. Under the provisions of the law, you may qualify for reduced interest rates on mortgage payments and credit card debt; protection from eviction if your rent is $1,200 or less; and delay of all civil court actions, such as bankruptcy, foreclosure or divorce proceedings.
